Dog Car Travel

If your dog is in car transit with PBS Pet Travel at any point, your dog will be safely transported using comfortable crates. These keep your dog calm and comfortable whether they are heading to a ferry or an aircraft. All of our specialist vehicles are air-conditioned and all of our drivers are pet lovers and have the welfare of your dog at the heart of all they do.

If you are taking your dog on a long journey in your own car, ensure that you take regular rest stops so that your pooch can relieve themselves, stretch their legs and enjoy a drink.

Shipping a Dog

Some animals simply find air travel too stressful. Or, depending on your journey, shipping your dog via a ferry might be a more affordable option. If your pooch prefers a slower pace of life this is something the team at PBS Pet Travel would be more than happy to help you arrange so that you know everything is perfect.

Dog Relocation by Air

Many airlines cater to animal-friendly travel with special programs and PBS Pet Travel will ensure your dog is completely safe and comfortable during transit. Furthermore, we will ensure your dog has all the correct paperwork and a pet passport should they need one. Whilst it is sometimes unavoidable that your pet will be nervous, just like us humans are when we fly, every aspect of their welfare will be considered before, during and after their journey.

If your pet is of a nervous disposition you can always discuss sedatives and anti-anxiety mediation to comfort your dog. These must only be prescribed from your dog’s vet. As pet travel experts, PBS Pet Travel will ensure your dog receives their medication before their flight, likely disguised inside a yummy treat!

Dog relocation doesn’t have to be stressful or unpleasant. Here are our top tips for making the transportation process as smooth as possible:

• If your dog has a car journey to the airport, get them used to car journeys.
• If your dog has never been away from home, book them in for a stay at a kennel to get used to being apart from the home and you.
• Ensure your dog has had ample exercise and plenty of fuss and play before travel.
• Reduce food intake prior to travel, especially if you have a puppy, this helps avoid any accidents.
• Get your dog acclimatized to their travel kennel – this could mean placing it in the house and encouraging them to sleep in it.
• Place their favourite blanket or toy in the travel kennel as a comfort during travel.
• Find a new vet in advance and check out the local dog walking areas close to your new home.
• Keep as calm as possible and keep goodbyes to a minimum so that your dog does not pick up on your mood.

Dog Travel Sickness

Dogs that aren’t used to travelling in vehicles can be prone to motion sickness. Often, even if your dog doesn’t vomit, you will notice their nausea due to excessive dribbling and/or panting, yawning and whining. Either way, having an uncomfortable pooch is no good.

For dogs that suffer from motion sickness whilst travelling, it is all about creating the most comfortable car ride possible. Dog seatbelts help keep your dog facing forward which means less nauseating visual cues. Allow your dog fresh air by cracking the window and ensure they are kept cool at all times.

Some owners also feed their dog a tiny piece of sugary sweet right before a car journey. This seems to help with nausea and a single jellybean can really help!

UK law recommends a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or guard as a way of keeping your dog safe whilst driving. These are also used to stop your dog distracting you whilst driving. There are a variety of different products on the market and PBS Pet Travel would be happy to advise you as to which would be appropriate for your pet.

Some airline carriers allow small dogs to be transported in the passenger section of the aircraft itself. They must remain in a dog carrier at all time and be placed under the seat in front of you. However, this isn’t always an option, especially with big breeds and long journey times.

All dogs must travel in airline-approved kennels during all flights. PBS Pet Travel will be happy to provide your pooch with an approved travel kennel. The purpose of these is to keep your pet safe and protected, as well as making their transportation as easy as possible.

However, if you would prefer to purchase your own, you will need to abide by the following strict guidelines:

• Your dog must be able to stand up straight without touching the top of the kennel, lie down fully and turn around inside easily.
• The container must have a solid base to protect your pet and keep other cargo safe from any spills and leaks.
• Your kennel will need ample ventilation on more than one side. This means that even if your pet’s carrier is located next to another item of cargo the free movement of fresh air will still be possible.
